Fifth Assignment

1) The main conflict in my novel is that Sethe, the main character can't get away from her past. She is being haunted by her dead baby girl and for once she actually forgot about the ghost and was actually happy when Paul D showed up and she was happy. But then one day a girl Beloved showed up and she is being reminded of her baby girl. Paul D really does not trust or like Beloved. But Sethe really likes her. So the conflict is Beloved a good person or a bad person??

2) The conflict contributes to the project of my novel because it adds to the fact slavery haunts evryone and not just the victims. It adds to it because you cant really trust everyone and the one person you trust the most could end up being actually evil.

3) Symbolism and setting really contribute alot to the project because it all helps explain how slavery was and Beloved being a character and a symbol really adds to the fact she can be both.

4) The project of my book is to prove that slavery was bad and to show that everyone was haunted by it even after it was over.

Fourth Assignment

Three elements that I have found in my book are actually very easy to recognize. The first one is a metaphor, which is "The city is an ocean.." Ths is a metaphor because well the city is not really an ocean. What it means is that the whole city is so joined together like an ocean. Everyone is seen as one and not seperated. What it does to the book is that it helps it describe how on certain places, slavery was not common and how everyone was seen as one and not differently.
Another element I found was symbolism, which is one of the characters who is named Beloved. Beloved represents and symbolizes the past and death. She represents teh past that Sethe is trying to get rid of and she meets Beloved and it all comes back to her. The memories of her baby girl and so many dreadful deathly memories that she had forgotten all came back to her right when Beloved came into the picture. Beloved is very important to the book because she sums everything together and shows how things were in the past and how disturbing it all was.
The last element I found was the setting of the story. The setting is out in the country in the 1800's, where slavery was present and alive. The house is a big two story house that seems to have some paranormal things going on. It all adds to the book alot because if the setting was different, the whole story would be out of line. The author chose this setting because he wanted to point out how horrible slavery was and how all the victims were scarred for life with all the memories.

Third Assignment

1.) My book is not completely original, but I also dont recognize any other stories. Like of course it has a lot of conflicts thats are very common, but then also the story about the haunted house and the Beloved girl are totally original.

2.) My story is kind of old news because all the stories about former slaves are all in a way alike. They all have their tramatic pasts and this story has it all. Reading this story, to me everything really isnt a surprise I expect to read all of it. But then when it comes to the haunted house and the Beloved girl, I also notice a resemblence to other stories. For example there are always girls who are very misteriouse and kind or wierd and creeepy, and this story defetnitly has it.

3.) A writer in this day, I dont think can really make a whole new story. its impossible because all conflicts are already set. What else could they possibly come up with??? Its too much and I realy dont think that they can come up with another story. Even if they tried, they will always write themselvs to a corner.

second assignment

1. I think that the main character is Sethe, because she was the one that escaped from Sweet Home, which is the place where she lived and was a slave. Sethe is very brave and proud. She escaped from Sweet Home pregnant and started a new life in a whole different town. Sethe is also in a way very blind and kind of too proud, because she sees everything how her house is and how terrible it is, and also how much it is affecting her daughter and she doesnt do anything to stop it and help her daughter. She knows that there is something wrong with the house, she knows that there is a ghost and its affecting her daughter alot, and she is not doing to stop it and just leave, all because she saids that shes worked too hard for it and sghe finally has a home. Sethe is also very young when it comes to love. She hadnt been with a man or even around a man, in over 18 years and now that an old friend from Sweet Home visits her, she is acting like a teenager in love. "Her mother left off swinging her feet and being girlish. Memory of Sweet Home dropped away from the eyes of the man she was being girlish for."

2. In a way Denver, who is Sethes daughter is like me. She is very independent and strong when it comes to fear. She is also very wise and she knows more than what people think. She is very young but she knows things that people dont even imagine. I am like that as well, because since I was little I have always been very independent and smart. I always knew what was going on, when my mom always thought I had no idea. Also I dont get scared easily, and when something does scare me, I stand up tall and just face everything and I can really control my fear just like Denver does.

3. I am Sethe and all I see is my perfect little daughter crying and me just holding her. I see a big, dark house and translucent red lights around the living room. I see an old beat up kitchen and wooden furniture, and absolutely no color in my home. Everything is dark and dull, and it makes me sad to see this. I see cabinet doors shut on their own and I hear the crying of my little baby girl who passed away so many years ago. I hear Denver crying and screaming while Paul D tells her itll be ok. I hear Paul D's laugh and his old beaten down by the years voice. I smell the recently wet grass out in the field, the dow of bread on the kitchen table. The fresh already cooked bisciuts on the table. I taste the fear in my mouth when I hear the doors being slammed. I feel scared and helpless, and know that I can not leave my home no matter what. Even though things are bad Im happy that Paul D is here to be with me. I feel like a coward that I dont just leave and get Denver out of here and leaving all the memories in the past.

First Assignment

The book I chose is Beloved by Toni Morrison. The reason I chose it is because I found out that it had to with slavery and I think thats its very sad and interesting, and I guess I really want to know more about it. So basically I chose it because it sounded depressing and sad and interesting, so might as well as read it.
